God dammit, WhatsApp, Signal was just fine until you went and reminded everyone closed-source messaging apps can't be trusted... πŸ™„

@greg_harvey Blame moxie for insisting Signal architecture had to be centralized...

@kekcoin Was looking at running your own Signal server this afternoon, interesting that moxie said "The Signal clients and server already support federation, so there shouldn't be any technical hurdles stopping the people who are really into federation from using our software to start their own federated network that demonstrates the viability of their ideas. If anyone needs help doing that, let me know. I'd be happy to help." Could be fun!

@greg_harvey It sounds like they are not developing things in a way that is compatible with federation tbh (probably they lack the software engineering to ensure cross-version compatibility).

@greg_harvey Some moxie quotes:

"I understand that federation and defined protocols that third parties can develop clients for are great and important ideas, but unfortunately they no longer have a place in the modern world."

"[Federating]'s something we'll probably never do again, and has fully convinced me that federated protocols are a thing of the past in this world of ours."

@greg_harvey "It is unlikely that we will ever federate with any servers outside of our control again, it makes changes really difficult."

@greg_harvey But hey, XMPP is still alive, it even has an easy-discovery option in the form of quicksy, and there's new contender! There's Jami, there's Briar. Plenty of viable alternatives :)

@greg_harvey happy birthday to you indeed! The best presents are the one we give to ourselves

@tursiops Hehe, thank you. Spoiling myself this year! But doing more jazz in groups, a 5-string makes life much easier!
